ANNIKA IN SHOCK MELTDOWN

Annika Sorenstam suffered a shock defeat to Taiwan's Candie Kung in today's quarter-finals of the HSBC Women's World Matchplay Championship in New Jersey.

Annika Sorenstam suffered a shock defeat to Taiwan's Candie Kung in today's quarter-finals of the HSBC Women's World Matchplay Championship in New Jersey.

The top seed had won a string of close matches, but her battling qualities disappeared in a disappointing defeat. Two up with five to play, she lost the 15th and then bogeyed the 16th and 18th to lose by one hole.

At the last, she took three to get down from the edge of the green, finally going out when she missed a six-foot par putt.

"I am very disappointed," admitted the player whose dream of winning all four majors this year came to an end at last week's US Women's Open.

"I was in control but Candie hung in there.

"But that's what can happen in matchplay. It's 18 holes and really anything can happen."

Sorenstam's loss ended the European challenge. Liselotte Neumann lost by three and two to South Korean Meena Lee in the morning third round and then Sophie Gustafson fell by two and one to American Wendy Ward in the quarter-finals.

Kung now meets Colombia's Marisa Baena, who has been the biggest surprise package. She added former world number one Karrie Webb to an impressive list of victims with a two and one win.

The South American went two up when she almost holed in one at the short seventh and comfortably held on for the victory.

Lee, who beat Pat Hurst by one hole in the quarter-finals, takes on Ward in the other semi-final.
