GREEN WINS OZ MASTERS PLAY-OFF

Left-hander Richard Green sank a four-foot putt on the opening playoff hole to capture his first gold jacket and the $225,000 first prize in a dramatic 2004 Mastercard Masters at Huntingdale.

Overnight leader David McKenzie together with the left-handed duo of Greg Chalmers and Green all finished at 17-under and headed down the 18th again to decide the winner in a sudden death playoff.

Chalmers found the trees on the right, but produced a brilliant recovery to land on the green. McKenzie's second fell short of the target and they were both outdone by Green.

From the fairway he rifled his approach next to the pin and calmly holed the putt for his first important win on the Australasian tour.

Earlier, Bradley Hughes had reached the 18th with a one stroke lead over the field at 18-under, but hit a wild tee shot right and was forced to take a penalty drop from an unplayable lie.

Playing his third, the shot left Hughes a difficult chip to the green and he put it 12 feet short of the pin. Needing to sink the putt to join the playoff, his putt slipped by the hole and so did his chances of a third jacket.

His double-bogey left him in a tie for 4th at 16-under with the Queensland pair of Brad Kennedy (69) and Steven Bowditch who finished with a strong 68.

Defending champion Robert Allenby was not able to repeat last year's effort with a scorecard that was littered with bogeys. A final day 76, including a back nine of 39, saw him drop right out of contention at 10-under.

The leading amateur title came down to the wire with young Queenslander and World Junior champion Jason Day holding on despite a double-bogey six on the 18th.

He beat Australian Amateur champion Andrew Martin by one stroke after Martin missed a 10-foot put for par on the 18th to tie Day.
